What temp gun, and when you say emissivity setting what setting are you talking about, because the the definition of emissivity I know doesn't really seem to apply here.

Emissivity is the ability of a material to radiate infrared energy, that being said a black body radiatior has an emissivity of 1.0, metals around .6 to .7.
The best way to figure out the right setting is to put a small piece of black electrical tape on the surface to be measured, electrical tape is around .96 to .98 emissivity whitch is normally where infrared measuring devices are set by default. Let the car sit in a warm room for a while to let the tape equalize tempature with the surface. then measure the tape and record the temp, then measure the surface and change the emissivity setting so it matches the temp of the tape. That should get you pretty close.
Hope that helps.

I was unaware that is how temp guns are gauge, I thought they were set upon ambient room temperature, not off of emissivity. Guess you learn something new everyday. Thanks.
