What’s Included

The Team Associated RC10DS is sold as a kit and requires assembly. Builders will need to supply:

The kit includes the molded body with window masks, rear wing, vintage-style wheels and tires, aluminum chassis, fiberglass shock towers, suspension components, ball differential transmission, slipper clutch, and all the hardware needed for assembly.

Chassis & Steering

The RC10DS stays remarkably faithful to the original design. At its heart is the classic stamped aluminum tub chassis complete with the familiar battery tray that allows the battery to mount perpendicular across the chassis. Team Associated has also retained many of the iconic details, including the front bumper, separate front lower plate, Anniversary Edition markings, and etched RC10DS logo.

There are a few subtle updates throughout the chassis, including additional servo mounting holes for improved electronics compatibility. The front suspension uses the signature narrow control arms, adjustable turnbuckles, vintage steering knuckles, and caster blocks that longtime Associated fans will instantly recognize.

One welcome feature returning from the original is the front and rear sway bars. These are essential on the RC10DS, helping reduce body roll and making the car significantly more predictable than many drivers may remember from years ago.

Suspension, Wheels & Tires

At speeds the tire is supposed to ballon for traction, but I still feel after all these years it’s a bit inconsistent.

Drivetrain

Power is delivered through the classic rear-wheel drive transmission featuring a fully adjustable ball differential and slipper clutch. The drivetrain is simple, lightweight, and wonderfully mechanical compared to today’s more complex touring cars.

One minor frustration encountered during the build involved motor installation. The slotted motor plate doesn’t provide a great deal of rotational adjustment, limiting pinion gear choices unless modifications are made. Using a smaller pinion solved the issue, but it’s something builders should be aware of during assembly.

Electronics

Since this is a kit, electronics are entirely up to the builder.

For this build, the car was equipped with:

The addition of DVC (Dynamic Vehicle Control) gives the vintage platform a modern helping hand. Initial gyro gain was far too aggressive, causing noticeable steering corrections and instability, but after dialing the sensitivity back, the system noticeably improved control without overwhelming the driving experience.

Performance

Driving the RC10DS today is a refreshing reminder of how different RC cars used to feel.

Unlike today’s planted four-wheel drive touring cars, the RC10DS has suspension travel, noticeable chassis roll, and rear-wheel drive. It demands smooth throttle inputs and rewards drivers who are willing to work with the chassis rather than simply relying on massive grip.

After reducing the DVC gyro gain, the car became much more predictable through corners. The excessive spinning and sudden snap oversteer often associated with older rear-wheel drive street cars was greatly reduced, allowing the driver to push harder with confidence.

Running on a 3S LiPo transforms the car into something surprisingly quick. Straight-line acceleration is far beyond what anyone experienced during the original NiCd and NiMH days, making speed runs genuinely exciting while still keeping the vintage driving personality intact.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was simply how much fun the RC10DS is to drive. Sliding through parking lots, hopping curbs, carving around traffic islands, and listening to the tires squeal brings back a style of RC driving that many modern touring cars have lost. Of course, the real purpose of the trailer is hauling another crawler. Loading up a second rig instantly creates an impressive scale look that’s sure to turn heads at trail runs and RC events. During testing, however, we discovered one thing owners will want to address before hitting the trail. Axial doesn’t include any tie-down straps or bungee cords, so an unsecured vehicle will gradually slide around on the deck when driving over bumps. It’s an easy fix with aftermarket straps, but it’s something to plan for if you intend to transport another crawler over rough terrain.

Compatibility is another thing to keep in mind. The trailer is designed to work with the proper rear hitch setup, so if your SCX10 III or compatible crawler doesn’t already have the correct hitch mount, you may need to add one before towing.

Overall, the trailer performs exactly as intended. It’s easy to assemble, tracks well behind the tow vehicle, and delivers the realistic scale appearance that Axial fans have been asking for. For anyone looking to complete a scale towing setup, it’s a fun accessory that adds both realism and personality to any trail rig.

Steering is equally impressive. Metal steering links, a metal servo horn, and dual CV front axles combine to produce an incredible amount of steering angle. Even at full lock, the tires maintain excellent clearance from the suspension components, allowing the Vertex 10 to maneuver through extremely tight technical sections with ease.

Suspension, Wheels & Tires

Redcat equipped the Vertex 10 with aluminum oil-filled emulsion shocks featuring bleeder screws for easy maintenance and tuning. Multiple mounting positions allow drivers to fine-tune suspension geometry, while quick-change shock posts make adjustments much easier than traditional screw-mounted designs.

The suspension itself is built around durable metal links with bent upper and lower rear links that improve ground clearance over obstacles. Metal pivot balls throughout the suspension further reinforce the premium construction.

Buyers can choose between two RTR configurations. The standard model uses 1.9-inch beadlock wheels, while the wider version features larger 2.2-inch wheels wrapped in aggressive 5.25-inch tires. Both utilize three-piece beadlock wheels with dual-stage foam inserts that provide excellent tire support while conforming well to uneven rock surfaces.

Steep descents are equally impressive thanks to the aggressive drag brake, allowing the crawler to ease down obstacles with minimal driver input.

Steering performance is among the best in its class. The tremendous steering angle makes navigating tight rock gardens surprisingly easy, reducing the need for repeated corrections or multi-point turns.

Suspension performance is equally impressive. The aluminum shocks deliver smooth articulation while the chassis remains composed on uneven terrain. Throughout testing, the tires maintained excellent contact with the rocks, maximizing available traction even on challenging climbs.

Both RTR versions tackled technical ledges, steep inclines, off-camber side hills, and rocky descents with confidence. The wider 2.2-inch model offered slightly more stability during aggressive climbs thanks to its broader stance and larger tires, while the 1.9-inch version remained extremely capable with a slightly more compact footprint.

The weighted portal covers, forward weight bias, excellent steering geometry, and sticky tires all contribute to a crawler that simply works. Rather than constantly fighting for traction, drivers can focus on choosing lines and enjoying the challenge.

The only real drawback during testing was drivetrain noise. The portal drivetrain and outrunner motor produce a noticeable gear whine under load. It’s certainly audible, but never distracting enough to take away from the overall driving experience.
