]]> The Traxxas TRX-4 Sport has long been one of the easiest RC crawlers to recommend to newcomers and experienced hobbyists alike. While the TRX-4 lineup includes a wide range of licensed bodies and feature-packed models, the Sport strips things down to the essentials, delivering the proven TRX-4 platform at a more affordable price point. With portal axles, a rugged steel frame chassis, oil-filled shocks, and dependable electronics, it provides an excellent foundation for anyone looking to hit the trails or create a custom build. When Traxxas released the latest gray version with green accents and clipless body mounting, it was the perfect excuse to start another project and see just how far a few carefully chosen upgrades could take this already capable crawler.

What’s Included

The ready-to-run Traxxas TRX-4 Sport arrives fully assembled and includes the truck, TQ 2.4GHz radio system, basic tools, decals, and an easy-start guide. The new gray body with green accents gives the truck a fresh look, while the hidden clipless body mounting system cleans up the appearance by eliminating traditional body clips. Underneath, you’ll find the familiar TRX-4 steel frame chassis, molded inner fenders, rock sliders, portal axles with metal gears, aluminum-body shocks, metal suspension links, and the reliable Titan 21T motor paired with the XL-5 HV ESC. Power is transferred through a robust single-speed transmission and locked axle setup that focuses on simplicity and durability.

The Factory Stock TRX-4 Sport

One of the reasons the TRX-4 Sport remains so popular is because it performs exceptionally well right out of the box. The portal axles provide excellent ground clearance, the suspension offers smooth articulation, and the Canyon Trail 1.9 tires deliver dependable grip across a wide range of terrain. The included 2075X metal gear steering servo is sufficient for casual trail driving, while the waterproof electronics allow drivers to tackle mud, water crossings, and rough terrain without worry. Parts support is readily available at hobby shops around the country, making maintenance and repairs simple. For many users, the stock truck is more than capable enough for trail adventures, but its real strength lies in how easily it can be customized.

Steering Servo Upgrade

The first performance-focused upgrade installed on this build was the new Traxxas 2280 high-torque steering servo. Rated at an impressive 600 oz-in of torque, it delivers a significant increase in steering authority when navigating technical rock sections where larger tires and obstacles can overwhelm a standard servo. To properly power the servo, the Traxxas BEC was installed alongside it, ensuring the steering system receives the voltage and current necessary to maximize performance. Installation is straightforward and largely bolt-in, making it one of the most worthwhile upgrades for anyone planning to tackle serious crawling terrain.

Brass Weights and Portal Covers

To further improve crawling capability, brass front knuckle weights were added using Traxxas aluminum portal covers. Each weight adds valuable mass directly over the front axle, helping keep the tires planted during climbs and improving overall stability. The installation process is simple and requires replacing the factory portal covers before attaching the brass weights. Combined with the steering servo upgrade, these weights immediately improve the truck’s ability to maintain traction and control on steep inclines and technical obstacles.

Aluminum Battery Strap

Not every upgrade needs to focus on performance. The aluminum battery hold-down strap was installed primarily for appearance, adding a premium touch to the chassis while matching the truck’s green accent theme. As with many Traxxas accessory parts, the installation takes only a few minutes and provides an easy way to personalize the truck without adding complexity.

Functional Winch System

Adding scale realism and trail utility, the Traxxas Pro Scale winch was installed along with a matching green fairlead. Capable of pulling up to 10 pounds, the winch integrates neatly into the factory front bumper and includes a wireless remote for operation. Installation requires replacing the molded winch detail on the bumper and routing the supplied wiring harness to the chassis electronics. Beyond its scale appearance, the winch proves useful for self-recovery situations and adds another layer of enjoyment to trail driving.

Pro Scale LED Lighting System

The most time-consuming upgrade in the build was the Traxxas Pro Scale LED Light Set. Unlike simple plug-and-play light kits, this system adds functional headlights, taillights, brake lights, reverse lights, turn signals, and hazard flashers. Installation requires cutting the Lexan body to accommodate the molded lighting housings and carefully routing multiple wiring harnesses through the chassis. While it demands patience at the workbench, the finished result dramatically enhances realism and creates opportunities for dusk and nighttime trail runs. The system also leaves room for future expansion through additional light bars and accessories.

Beadlock Wheels and Canyon Trail Tires

To complete the appearance package, a set of Traxxas beadlock wheels was paired with Canyon Trail tires. While green beadlock rings were originally planned, silver rings ultimately complemented the gray body surprisingly well and created a clean, factory-inspired look. The beadlock setup simplifies tire maintenance while adding scale detail that perfectly matches the overall theme of the build.

Trail Performance

With all of the upgrades installed, the TRX-4 Sport remained true to its original character while gaining noticeable improvements in capability. The high-torque servo delivered stronger steering control on rocks, while the brass front weights helped settle the chassis during steep climbs and off-camber situations. The portal axles continued to provide excellent clearance over ledges and obstacles, and the Canyon Trail tires maintained impressive traction across rock, dirt, and muddy sections. The winch proved both functional and entertaining during recovery situations, while the lighting system added an entirely new level of realism. Perhaps most impressive was the fact that the stock Titan motor and XL-5 HV speed control continued to perform well, demonstrating that drivers don’t necessarily need to replace every electronic component to enjoy excellent trail performance.

The Traxxas TRX-4 Sport remains one of the best values in the crawler market because it succeeds both as a ready-to-run vehicle and as a customization platform. Right out of the box, it’s durable, capable, and easy to drive.
