RC4WD is a favorite among scale RC enthusiast and I am no different. Their bodies and chassis offer the ultimate in scale realism and performance. With the right angles, it is nearly impossible to tell an RC from the real thing. The RC4WD Gelande II Cruiser is no different, and if anything, offers a higher level a realism to their offerings. It was truly only a matter of time before I would succumb to the urge to build my own.

Authors Thoughts:

The Gelande II chassis is tried-and-true as it has been on the market for many years and offers proven performance and reliability. Stock, the chassis comes with an assortment of cool items including the R3 single speed transmission, center mount transfer case, locked differentials, stamped steel beadlock wheels, and dual-rate oil-filled shocks. The instructions are easy to follow and the chassis is a piece of scale automotive art. Add to that a killer cruiser hardbody, a few accessories, and you are set to have an outdoor adventure. The rigs looks as good on the street as it does on the trail!

THE BUILD:

As the rig is unboxed, there are two separate assembly areas, the chassis and the body. With each step in the build, it is important to pay attention to the pictures and the directions that are given. Take care not to force parts where they do not fit and make sure not to cross thread the hardware. Using a nice set of tools will help to ensure the entire build goes as smooth as possible. The chassis is built first and then you will move to the body. Once you get to the point where you are going to start building the body, I recommend you lay out all the pieces and see how they fit together so you can determine how and when you are going to apply paint. If you assemble the entire body and then try to paint it, you will not be able to get to all the small details. Additionally, if you paint everything and then assemble, you make end up removing paint to ensure everything fits the way it should. Just take your time and you will get results you are trying to achieve.

There were a few minor issues that can be addressed during assembly that aids in the ability to drive the rig once complete. The first step that I found that needed minor adjustments were the steering tire rod assembly built in step 6. When installed in step 37, there was a considerable amount of toe-out on the axle. Removing a minimal amount of material from the Z-S0401 rod ends using a rotary tool corrected the issue.

Prior to installing Z-S0791 in step 20, I prefer to grove the servo mount prior to installation. If these parts are not grooved, then the gusset found on most servos will need to be trimmed, weakening the mounting brackets on the servo. The grove only needs to be about 1.5mm wide and a few millimeters deep. This can be done with a small file, rotary tool, or milling machine.

In step 26, prior to installing the lenses, I used a red Sharpie to color lens Z-B007-11&12 red from the inside. I then used an orange Sharpie to color lens Z-B0077-3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, & 10, also from the inside.

As you are building the chassis, it is important to use a blue thread lock to ensure all the hardware stays tight even on the roughest trails. Additionally, it is a good idea to disassemble the transmission, transfer case, and axles to ensure an adequate amount of grease has been applied to moving parts and to also apply thread lock to these parts as well. While you have the axles apart, verify the mesh between the pinion and different gear is adequate. If the gears are too loose, then it is more likely that a pinion or differential gear can strip, and if too tight, then performance suffers. To shim the pinion gear, I recommend using RC4WD axle shims, PN Z-S1559. Doing these items now will prevent failures in the field later and a considerable amount of disassembly. If you are planning on adding other scale accessories to the kit, and can afford to purchase them prior to building the kit, consider installing them as you assemble the chassis. Items like the ARB differential covers are considerably easier to add prior to mounting the axles to the chassis.

For electronics in the Cruiser I started with a Futaba R2104GF receiver and a S3305 servo and controlled the truck using my trusty Futaba 4PL radio. For the motor, a Castle Creations 1406-2280Kv sensored motor and a Mamba X ESC. As always, the Futaba equipment offered known and trusted performance. The Castle system blew me away. While the ESC is larger than most making it challenging to fit under the body while trying to keep everything hidden, the performance was well work the pain. The only modification I made to the Castle system was to lengthen the sensor wire because I was trying to keep the ESC at the back of the rig to hide it. I would recommend purchasing a longer sensor wire, but if you are impatient like me, only cut and lengthen one wire at time so you do not cross any of your sensor wires. The brushless crawler setup on 2S offers insane low speed torque and precision with awesome full trigger power!

Once the chassis is assembled, then it is time to move to the body and it is HUGE in comparison to the D90 and other 1/10 scale rigs. The Cruiser body is much closer to 1/8 or 1/9 scale and consists of tons of parts. If you add one hop up to the entire kit, I highly recommend purchasing the light kit from RC4WD. For less than $18, the light kit adds tons of reality. Taking your time to ensure each part is cut flush helps to ensure the highest quality build. Additionally, using the right glue is critical to ensure a strong bond. I started using a plastic weld, but the joints were not strong enough, so after some trial and error I ended up using Zap-a-Gap medium CA glue.

Early I decided while the stock body was awesome, I wanted to go with something a little different. I started with the RC4WD Tough Armor side sliders which required minimal trimming of the body. From there it was unclear exactly what I was going to do with the body. After much deliberation, I decided to go with a half cab FJ40 look. I carefully cut 4.25” out of the stock top and then started glued the front and rear sections back together. While the two pieces were close to perfect, it did require a bit of styrene, body putty, and an untold amount of filler primer to get a smooth roof. At this point it was obvious that the stock roll cage was not going to fit in the cab, so a custom steel roll cage was fabricated that started in the cab and protruded into the bed of the rig. I picked a Capri Blue from a list of Toyota FJ40 color codes to replicate a stock color. The rig could have been completed at this point, but it needed just a bit more.

The stock looks were good, but it needed a little something to make it pop. I started with the RC4WD Fuel Offroad Anza 1.7” beadlock wheels wrapped with a set of 1.7” Goodyear Wrangler MT/R scale tires. The outside diameter and overall width was as close to perfect as one could get. The Fuel wheels are an absolute work of art. The scale hardware is amazing and when wrapped with such a great scale tire, it is nearly impossible to tell that they are not true 1:1 scale products. The Goodyear Wrangler MT/R offers more than just crazy good looks, but they also offer performance to match. The stock foams were able to handle the weight of the rig with only minimal sidewall bulging of the tire. The rubber compound is fairly soft resulting in the ability to climb the steepest slopes.

On the front bumper I mounted a period correct Warn 8274 winch with a wireless controller. I have had a lot of winches over the years, but this winch knocks it clean out of the park in both scale realism and performance. I think I wasted close to an hour just playing with the winch the first time I pulled it out of the box. After that I would have my boy drive his crawler into spots that would cause him to get stuck so I could winch him out. I added the Hi-Lift Extreme Jack to the bed of the truck to ensure I could jack it up incase I got a flat. It’s hard to imagine that for less than $30, I can buy a functioning Hi-Lift jack. To finalize the truck I added the ARB front and rear differential covers.

At this point the truck was done and ready to hit the trail, but one night an add came up on Craigslist for a full-size FJ40 expedition trailer and I knew I had to replicate the trailer for this build. The guy who built the trailer had a 60-page post on one of the big 4×4 forums and included all the important dimensions. At a swap meet a few months prior I had also picked up a set of RC4WD T-Rex 60 plastic axle housings and a set of leaf springs and mount for the same axles. The axles needed a home and I needed a trailer. Using 0.08” aluminum sheet I cut the necessary pieces to build the smaller front box and larger rear box. Some small hinges from my local hardware store were mounted to allow the tops to open. All the parts are drilled and tapped using 3mm hardware. The tent was fabricated using spare Traxxas ball ends, some 1/8” steel rod, and some material from the fabric store. It may be more dangerous using a sewing machine then a milling machine, but after a few nights the tent and cover where completed.

ON THE TRAIL
The Gelande II chassis is well suited for class 0 and class 1 type crawling. The suspension is smooth and well designed. The first thing that I noticed is with the size of the body, the rig was a little top heavy. It did not help that I had added a steel roll cage to the beast. The threaded shocks allow me to make some quick adjustments and tune the suspension to my driving style. Once I got a feel for the rig, I able to push it to the limits and make it up any line I picked.

The stock tires are not overly aggressive, but the upgraded Goodyear tires provided ample traction on a wide variety of different surfaces from loose dirt to the red rocks of Colorado. I had a concern that the tire and foam combination might have been too soft to support the weight of the rig on the trial, but it handled beautifully. There was the perfect amount of sidewall deflection and traction.

The best aspects of the Goodyear tires were also their downfall. The amount of traction I had on the red rocks of Colorado was placing a lot of force on the S3305 servo. Typically for 1/10th scale rigs with 1.9” tires or smaller, the S3305 provides good power at a completive price. However, with the weight, size, and traction I have with the cruiser, I had to upgrade to a S9372SV which provided more than double the torque. I would recommend utilizing a servo with at least 20kg*cm of torque.

The Castle Creations sensored crawler setup is beautiful. Running a 35T brushed motor in a gelande II chassis would be similar to driving with a fresh stock motor. It provides combination of good torque and horsepower. Upgrading to the Castle Creations 2280Kv motor and Mamba X ESC is like driving with an angry, highly modified LS engine. There is more than plenty of low end grunt, to the point that you may be able to climb straight up a wall, while providing enough wheelspin to hop over just about anything. Additionally, I love using the third channel to adjust key features of the ESC. For crawlers, I use the third channel to adjust the amount of drag brake that I have on the trails. If you are on the rocks, I dial up the drag brake to allow me to stick on the rig on any slope. As I get onto the flats, I tune down the drag brake so I do not do front wheelies on high traction surfaces as I come to a stop. If you have not tried a Mamba X, I am not sure what you are waiting on, go get one!!

The rig was beautiful on the trails. From a few feet away, the cruiser looked and performed like a real rig. The period correct blue and white paint schemed screamed retro. I was fortunate to have quite a few mods on the rig, but if you do build a cruiser, the light kit is a must. The winch is insanely awesome, as well as the working jack, but if you get the rig out at dawn or dusk, the lights just complete the package.

THE LAST WORD
I could not wait for the opportunity to build a Gelande II chassis. RC4WD is great at manufacturing scale RC goodness and this kit does not disappoint. Stock the Gelande II comes with a ton of great parts and when you start to look at the aftermarket accessories, you will find an entire world of awesome accessories for this chassis. Out of the box, the rig is very capable and can tackle the hardest obstacles.

When you add the Cruiser body to the build you will soon find that it’s looks are second to none. The hard-plastic body is filled with details that are only found as you are painting and making the rig your own. Building this kit is similar to putting together a plastic model car. Taking your time with paint and other details will yield a rig, that when on the trail is hard to distinguisher from the real thing.

I am highly impressed with both the look and performance of the Gelande II Cruiser kit. It is at home on the trails. I am not sure where I go next, maybe a long wheelbase Gelande II D110 or something else, but I am sure my next scale rig will be coming from RC4WD.

Our Axial SCX10 II Trail Honcho is getting another upgrade, this time Steel RRP Gears. Again we’ve turned to Robinson Racing for their precision machined hardened gears. This time we’re replacing both the top shaft gear and the idler gear. The idler gear is a must do upgrade for the Honcho since the stock unit is plastic. The stock top gear on the Honcho is metal, but we want the piece of mind knowing a RRP hardened gear is in the transmission for better durability reasons. See how easy it is to install these gears and then you get to see some more action footage of the Trail Honcho out on a trail in Falmouth Maine.

Wow, we had no idea how popular this build would be, but the views for part 1 of our Traxxas Slash RC Drag Car Project have been climbing rapidly. We’d like to thank everyone who took the time to watch and now we’re on to part 2. We’ve been working on a lot of stuff at the shop and have finally been able to circle back around and work the Drag Car and we start off the build at the front end. In this video Greg talks about the changes made to the front to widen it’s stance. Talks about changes to the shocks, shows off the LCG chassis and more. This is going to be a multiple part build, so if you want to turn your Slash or other RC truck into a Traxxas Slash RC Drag Car Project, you’ll want to follow this series. Please allow ample time for us to finish part 3. Thank you!

We’ve seen the growing popularity of RC street drag racing using machines like the Traxxas Slash. Our friend Tim Smith has been spearheading the movement with NPRC (No Prep RC) and the increase in participants got us on the move to build our own Drag car from a Slash. Luckily we had a donor truck on hand and picked up a bunch of parts for the build. Of course we’re going to document that build in video form. In this video, part 1, we’re going to go over all of the parts collected for the project Traxxas Slash RC Drag Car. If you want to turn your Slash or other RC truck into a street drag car, you’ll want to follow this series.

We were never a fan of taking the bus to school when we were a kid. But if our school bus looked like the Tamiya King Yellow 6×6, things may have been different. The King Yellow is a cool looking school bus body on Tamiya’s G6-01 six wheel drive electric platform which is a full build up kit. We’ve already did and unboxing and review of the G6-01 as the Konghead 6×6 so we were looking to do a little something different in this video. That’s when the idea hit us to show you all the upgrades you can do to this fun RC Machine. Plus we decided to bump up the power too and install the 4-wheel steering set-up. Did the hop-ups help? We’ll show you our experience with the Tamiya King Yellow 6×6 and break down the performance with the option parts installed.

Pro-Line Racing is one of those companies that are very in touch with their customers. They regularly hold all sorts of contests and giveaways, and love to feature their user’s rides on their own website and even host giveaways from time to time. At RCDriver we love companies that interact with our great community to keep the passion alive and exciting.

With all that being said, it should come to no surprise that right now Pro-Line is looking to feature your rides on their blog and even have some nice prizes to give away. Now obviously they want to see some of their products being shown in it’s glory and that is where we come into help. Pro-Line keeps releasing products so quickly that sometimes it is hard to keep up! In this article we wanted to highlight some killer products that can help you get featured on their website. Even if getting featured on the site isn’t your end goal, these products will help your vehicle stand out from the rest. We wanted to stick with a scale/crawler theme, since accessorizing scale rigs is one of the most fun parts of our hobby right now!

Hit The Body Shop!
Now obviously the most noticeable part of any scale rig is the body, so you better be sure yours is up to the task. Thankfully we have many options here, it used to be that you had a very small selection in the scaler world, and without shoehorning custom body shells you are out of luck. We have selected a few standout body shells that would look good on a variety of crawling/trailer platforms. Keep in mind these bodies require painting, but that is half of the fun!

Ambush Body with Ridge-Line Trail Cage
The Ambush body has been a very popular shell for Pro-Line and with great reason, it rocks! We love the detailed interior, and the ability to mount on any 12.3” (313mm) wheelbase truck. The newest release now contains the Ridge-Line Trail Cage, which absolutely brings this body to life. The cage has been modeled after full scale trucks, and helps the Ambush body look more “modern” compared to the older body shell. One great thing about cages are that they are so easily able to accept scale accessories, from lights to water coolers (more on that later). Back to the interior, not only is their the front dash and seats, but there is a rear gas tank molded and even a trunk for adding whatever you may desire. We really like how this body shell is such an open canvas for accessories, which is half the fun!

If you haven’t checked out Pro-Line’s YouTube channel in awhile, they posted an excellent video showing the body in action and highlighting some of the details. Pro-Line’s YouTube Channel

Sumo Body
Sometimes being different is what you need to stand out of the pack and Pro-Line has you covered with the Sumo body with has been designed for smaller scalers (think ECX Barrage sized). We guarantee that you will not find anything more quirky on the market today in this segment. This body is loaded with all sorts of fun details that allow for multiple levels of customization (see a theme here?). This body is a sort of modified Sumo with the hardtop removed, giving tons of access for anything you can imagine. Feel free to load up the rear with Pro-Line accessories, toy figures, or anything your mind can imagine.

1991 Toyota 4Runner Body
The Toyota 4Runner is still by today’s standards one of Toyota’s most capable off-roaders which is why it is such a timeless design. There are plenty of old ones still kicking around, both on the roads and on the trails which is why the ‘91 is such a perfect model to base a body shell off of. As with most Pro-Line bodies, this Toyota is fully licensed so you know it will be a faithful recreation of the original right down to the included decals. Even though this is an SUV style body, there is plenty of room for customization, and we think the roof rack looks absolutely killer on the 4Runner. It fits practically any 12.3″ vehicle and looks great even with the most basic of paintjobs.

1985 Toyota HiLux SR5 Body (Cab + Bed)
At the risk of appearing to be Toyota fanboys, our last pick for bodies is the timeless Hilux. Even though the Hilux name has been dropped in North America, this light duty truck has been a staple in the off-road world. It was very cheap to maintain and seemed to last forever making it not only a fun truck, but a very durable work truck as well. Ask around and everyone remembers the 80’s Hilux and probably has some fun stories to share as well. This body reminds us of the old Tamiya radio control kit, which unfortunately goes for a pretty penny nowadays. So why not build a modern version on any standard 12.3” crawler chassis. Plus with the open bed and roof room there is plenty of room to customize this body to your heart’s content. Plus it comes with all of the cool iconic 80’s styling within the included decals.

Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize
I don’t know about you, but we at RCDriver find that half of the fun of a scale build involves cramming as many miniature replicas of items you would find in a full scale off-roader. Often the challenge with rc is that it can be difficult to source such items at such a small scale, while remaining durable enough for trail crawling. Pro-Line is fantastic in this department as they offer tons of accessories and often come in convenient packs to help you get going. Many of these will not break the bank either, most of these clock in around 20 bucks at your retailer of choice.

6″ Super-Bright LED Light Bar Kit 6V-12V (Curved)
Full scale off-roaders need extra lighting so they don’t get stranded out on the trail at night. So why not give your RC rig the same capabilities and not let the darkness get in your way of crawling and bashing? This LED kit is insanely bright and can absolutely light the way if you decide to run at night, and looks the part as well. Another great feature is that the light bar runs off of either 6V power (can be plugged directly into your RX and run of your ESC’s BEC), or there is an option of powering it via a small 3S LiPo for extra brightness. The 6” curved bar should fit most 1/10th scale rigs and even looks great on a Slash or monster truck.

Scale Recovery Tow Strap with Duffel Bag
Ever get stuck crawling and wish you had scale looking method to rescue yourself? The Pro-Line scale recovery strap is an excellent accessory that looks the part on basically any off-roader. It even comes with a small duffel bag for storage of the strap that really brings the whole package together with the scale look. Throw it on a roof rack or truck bed and you are good to go whenever you want to snap that cool picture of your car being rescued! Don’t worry about durability either, this thing is solid and should last you longer than your vehicle does.

Scale Accessory Assortment #9
Pro-Line has tons of small accessory kits (if the #9 didn’t give it away already) that package a few scale like accessories that look killer on your rig or garage diorama. Really each kit has sort of a theme, and we really like almost all of the kits on sale. But one that really stands out as a winner is the “#9” kit as anyone who has gone off-roading can really relate. What better after a long day of trailing to set up the grill and relax with some adult beverages? This kit has a super scale look and includes a grill, propane tank, and keg. These products look fantastic and have an extra level of detail that you expect from Pro-Line, but let the picture speak for itself.

Rectangular Scale Off-Road Tubular Roof Rack
If you are running a large enough body shell, nothing beats Pro-Lines rectangular roof rack. This offers tons of cargo space for whatever accessories you can imagine. And of course it looks super scale and from our experience if you get the angle of the photo right, hard to tell that this isn’t the real deal. It includes all of the mounting hardware needed so there is no custom work to speak of. It even includes a method of mounting off-road lights to further add to the scale effect. Out of all the products, this roof rack is a must have on anyone’s scale rig.

New Rims for the Win
Now that we have all of body and accessory needs out of the way, really all that is left is the wheels and tires. Since the tire choice will be largely up to the user and what surface they will be running on, we wanted to highlight the different wheel options that Pro-Line offers. We are sticking to the 1.9” size which is more for the scale side of things and the two offerings highlighted are beadlocks, so they can be used over and over when it is time to change tires.

Pro-Forge FaultLine 1.9″ Gun Metal Aluminum/Black Bead-Loc 6 Lug Wheels
We love the gunmetal look in general, and the FaultLine aluminum wheels look absolutely stunning with this color combination. Not only do you get the added weight benefits of using aluminum, but they are fully adaptable to any standard crawler being that it has a 6 lug design. They are CNC machined for the ultimate in durability and they pair well with Pro-Line’s offset hex adapters (Part: 6292-00). They also offer the wheels in a pure aluminum/black bead combo if it fits your color scheme better than the gunmetal version. All hardware (except any necessary hex adapters) are supplied, which includes the cast black bead-loc rings.

FaultLine 1.9″ Black/Black Bead-Loc 10 Spoke Front or Rear Wheels
It is completely understandable if aluminum bead-locs are out of your budget range so here is a more cost effective option. This is a similar style to the previously mentioned rims, only instead of aluminum the wheel is comprised of a durable plastic. The bead-loc rings are still metal however and these mount just as any other bead-loc rim onto any standard 1/1 sized scaler. The simple clean look is easy to pull off with most body shell colors and types.

Wrap Up
Hopefully we have given you inspiration and ideas on how to spruce up your scaler and get it ready for some killer photography. Now get your crawler, grab your phone and get out there! If you have a shot worth posting be sure to send it to Pro-Line for a chance to be featured on their website, and who knows you may end up winning prizes along the way. Click here to submit your photo!

Sometimes we start to build projects and have no idea how they will turn out in the end. That was the case with our Project Traxxas Bronco Stampede 4×4 Basher. This truck actually started life as a Traxxas Rally car. Many of the parts on the Traxxas Rally also fit the Slash 4×4 and the Stampede 4×4 and vice-versa. Our Rally was not in use, so we decided to turn it into a truck. We had a Pro-Line Bronco body that we originally picked up for a trail truck project, but it also seemed like the right dimensions to fit a Stampede 4×4. We’ve been thinking about making a backyard basher truck that would go anywhere and everything just started to come together and the project was assembled over a few months in spare time. Well it’s done and we finally get to show you after we released a few related videos along the way like the Bronco body painting video and the Lightbar Install/ Power video. We hope you like our fun little project and hope it inspires you to build something fun!

A while back, Banggood.com sent over a WPL Toys B1 RC Military Truck. We were interested in reviewing the truck because it’s RC of course and because the hardbody is pretty well detailed. The frame seemed to be decent too and it did in fact prove to be a lot of fun as a backyard RC toy. But we like many others see a little more potential in this RC toy and wanted to turn it into a project. RC Driver staff member Mark seemed to be the most enthusiastic about it, even more so than Greg who reviewed the truck originally on the channel. We think it’s because Mark is looking for an excuse to print out more RC parts on his 3D printer. So we let Mark take over ownership of the B-1 and in this video he gives you an overview of his ideas and what he wants to do with the M35A2 2&1/2 ton truck model. He’s going to need your help too! See the entire video for details.

If you live in a place that gets snow and you love RC, you’ve probably dreamed about plowing your driveway with and RC plow. Many have built custom plows to do it, but now RC4WD makes it much easier to make the dream come true with their RC plow offerings. We got out hands on their all new Super Duty V Snow Plow along with a Warn Winch to raise and lower the plow and the necessary mounting hardware to bolt it to our RC4WD TF2 with Blazer body set. Bolting up this pre-assembled plow is easy and so is setting up the electronics. We show you a simple set-up anyone can replicate. Once we’re done with the plow overview, we show you the truck in action actually plowing a driveway during a snowstorm.
