Unless you live in a remote part of the world or you just got into the hobby yesterday, you know that one of the best upgrades you can add to any RC vehicle is a gear or slipper unit from Robinson Racing Products, a.k.a RRP. This month we are installing a steel spur gear to a Slash 4×4. This is the same unit that can be installed on a Stampede 4×4 or the Telluride.
A single screw secures the gear cover. Remove it and the cover so you can loosen the motor in its mount.
Once removed, the slipper unit is disassembled with three screws. The first two are shown removed here.
The new RRP steel gear is on the left and the stock gear on the right. The RRP gears are available in various sizes. The new steel RRP gear is placed on the slipper unit and secured with the stock screws.
A total of four screws need to be removed in order to disconnect the entire rear of the vehicle. Two on the bottom….
…and two more on the top. Once removed the rear end can be eased away from the chassis.
The entire slip- per unit is slid out fron the bottom of the chassis. The new one will go in tha same way the old one comes out. Do not force any- thing.
Thread-locking compound on the screws will help to keep them in place. Next, the unit is reinstalled just as the stock one came out.
While you have things opened up it’s a good time to make sure the pinion gear is secured well. Remove it and its set screw and add a small amount of blue thread locking compound before reinstalling it.
Set the proper gear mesh and tighten the motor mount. Reinstall the gear cover and you’re done
If you want to take your car to the next level and are uncertain of how to install aftermarket parts, this is the column for you. Each month we will show how to install option parts on various vehicles. Although the parts and cars we feature may not match your particular ride, the instructions may help guide you in upgrading your machine. If you have a suggestion for an option part you’d like to see installed, email your suggestion to editors@rcdriver.com
