BASED ON VOLVO’S FLAGSHIP FH16 HEAVY TRUCK

The Tamiya Volvo FH16 Tow Truck recreates the real-world Volvo FH16, part of the manufacturer’s highly respected FH Series of commercial trucks. Introduced with a major redesign in 2012, the FH platform represents Volvo’s top-tier heavy transport line, and the FH16 Globetrotter 750 sits at the top of that range.

The full-size truck is powered by a massive 16.1-liter turbocharged inline-six engine capable of producing an incredible 750 horsepower—making it one of the most powerful production trucks in the world. Vehicles like this are often used in heavy recovery operations, tasked with towing disabled tractor trailers and other large commercial vehicles.

Opening doors on the body give a realistic look, and also allow access to install separately sold MFC and Actuator units.

Tamiya’s 1/14-scale version captures the imposing look of the real machine with impressive attention to detail. The cab features an accurately shaped body, detailed interior, opening doors, and a photo-etched front grille that enhances the scale realism.

FUNCTIONAL TOW TRUCK EQUIPMENT

What truly separates the FH16 Tow Truck from other trucks in Tamiya’s lineup is the elaborate towing assembly mounted behind the cab. Built from a combination of metal and durable molded parts, the recovery system includes a winch boom, under-lift, and stabilizing outriggers.

Boom length and angle can be adjusted, the former up to an impressive 586mm long. The latter gives three different angles.

The underlift can be extended and retracted, and features adjustable forks. It turns on a joint to enable smooth cornering.

These components can be positioned manually to simulate real towing operations. With its sturdy construction and powerful drivetrain, the FH16 is even capable of towing other 1/14-scale RC tractor trucks, making it a standout model for multi-truck setups.

POWERFUL 8X4 DRIVETRAIN AND TRANSMISSION

A front-mounted Tamiya TR Mighty Tuned 35-turn motor provides the muscle for the FH16. Power travels through a propeller shaft to the dual rear axles, creating an 8×4 drivetrain layout similar to the full-size tow truck.

A look here at the base ladder frame chassis, which is a sturdy affair composed of aluminum side channels and resin cross members.

The model also features a three-speed transmission that can be shifted directly from the transmitter for a more immersive driving experience. When performing towing duties, a single gear is used to ensure smooth and controlled pulling power.

Both front axles are steered on this model, with a single servo used to turn the wheels. Wheels turn realistically at different angles.

Each rear axle includes a differential gear for smooth cornering, while the twin-steering front axle design improves maneuverability despite the truck’s large size.

HEAVY-DUTY LADDER FRAME CHASSIS

The FH16 Tow Truck rides on a strong ladder-frame chassis that combines aluminum side rails with resin cross members. This construction provides both durability and rigidity while keeping weight manageable.

The suspension uses metal leaf springs and friction dampers to replicate the design of full-size heavy-duty trucks. A float-mounted die-cast front axle and reinforced resin rear axles help provide stable handling while keeping the truck easy to drive.

When complete, the model measures an impressive 28.8 in (732mm) long, giving it serious road presence whether on display or in operation.

While the Tamiya Volvo FH16 Tow Truck featured in this article requires painting during assembly, Tamiya introduced a convenient alternative in January 2026. The Volvo FH16 Globetrotter 750 Tow Truck Silver Edition (Item #47528) comes with the ABS body pre-finished in TS-17 Gloss Aluminum and protected by a durable urethane clear coat.

This factory-painted version allows builders to skip the painting process while still enjoying the same impressive detail and functionality as the standard kit.

OPTIONAL ELECTRONICS FOR ADDED REALISM

The FH16 Tow Truck supports optional LED lighting for the headlights and taillights, and Tamiya offers additional electronics that greatly enhance the model’s realism and functionality.

OPTIONAL UPGRADE: ELECTRIC ACTUATOR SET

Tamiya Electric Actuator Set for 1/14 Tow Truck (Item #56553)

The optional Electric Actuator Set allows the truck’s winch boom and under-lift to be raised and lowered using the transmitter. The system includes a precision geared motor, spindle cylinder, and the ACU-02 control unit, along with a toggle switch for manual operation.

With this upgrade installed, the Volvo tow truck becomes a far more interactive recovery vehicle.

OPTIONAL UPGRADE: MULTI-FUNCTION CONTROL UNIT

Tamiya Tractor Truck Multi-Function Control Unit “Euro-Style” MFC-03 (Item #56523)

For the ultimate scale experience, the Tamiya Tractor Truck Multi-Function Control Unit “Euro-Style” MFC-03 adds sound, lighting, and vibration effects to the truck. The system uses digitally recorded engine sounds captured from real trucks and includes air horn blasts, gear-shift sounds, and other operational audio cues.

The unit also controls headlights, brake lights, fog lamps, turn signals, and hazard lights, dramatically increasing the truck’s scale realism. If you are considering this option, it is best to install it while building the Volvo FH16 kit.
